The nation is undergoing solar energy revolution. Farukh Khan, student of Institute of Solar Technology installing small solar lighting system at his village, Alwar District, Rajasthan. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is working hard to earn the tag of ‘solar city’ for the New Delhi area of the national capital as it has framed a detailed plan for the rooftop solar energy generation. The chairman of NDMC Jalaj Shrivastava has said that they have identified 40 buildings in the area, which fall under their jurisdiction for the installation of rooftop solar panels. The buildings on which the roof top panels will be set up include NDMC schools, hospitals, offices, sub-stations, inquiry offices etc. An NDMC official said that they choose their own buildings for the pilot project as we did not require a ‘no objection certificate’ from any agency. Solar power in India now accounts for over 2GW of the country’s electricity generation capacity, according to government figures. Tobias Engelmeier, managing director at Bridge to India said in a recent blog that “Solar power is the only currently commercially available source of power that could both provide enough power from within the country to meet India’s rising demand and in addition offer distributed solutions that are less dependent on grid extension.” The Ministry Of New and Renewable Energy is promoting the grid connected solar rooftop systems in the country under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. Central Financial Assistance upto 30 percent of the benchmark cost of the project is provided for setting up of the solar rooftop systems which generate the power and are connected to the grid. 600 MW of solar rooftop installations on homes by 2018

Going by the 2011 Census, India has around 330 million houses, with 140 million houses having proper roofs which can accommodate on an average 1-3kWp of solar PV system. Among the 140 million houses, around 130 million are having two rooms. Besides, there are other commercial buildings, shopping complexes and offices that can accommodate larger solar PV capacities. Taking into account the houses with two rooms, approximately 25000 MW of solar capacity can be installed by putting solar panels on 20 per cent of the roofs. With quality sunshine around the year, and huge availability of rooftop space in the country, India can kick out the power woes by installing solar panels on them. As of now, there is clear lack of awareness and the will to harness the potential that could help the country address the issue of energy security to a greater extent. Solar rooftop subsidy for 10,000 customers in Tamil Nadu

the hindu business line , CHENNAI, OCT. 24:   Spend Rs 50,000, put up a rooftop solar plant, save Rs 9,200 a year — this is the Tamil Nadu Government’s pitch to domestic electricity consumers. The Government today issued an order making available a capital subsidy of Rs 20,000 for each 1 kW solar rooftop system, formalising a promise made by the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in April. The Tamilnadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), which is the renewable energy development arm of the State Government, pegs the cost of a 1 kW solar rooftop system at Rs 1 lakh. The Government of India gives a subsidy of Rs 30,000. As such, the investor needs to bring in only Rs 50,000 (TN gives another Rs 20,000). TEDA reckons that the solar system will generate 1,600 units a year. At a tariff of Rs 5.75 per kWhr, the annual savings works out to Rs 9,200.
